The David Bouverie Scholarship Fund

Second Bouverie Scholarship awarded
In May 2010 at the Annual Meeting of the Bouverie Docents, Audubon Canyon Ranch awarded the second annual David Bouverie Scholarship to Sophia Grubb, a recent graduate of Rancho Cotate High School.

Sophia says, "Being a Juniper did help me figure out what I wanted to pursue in college and in my future. I learned a lot about the environment and conservation during my time at Bouverie. I have always been good in math and science, so I chose to major in civil and environment engineering because I ultimately hope to work as a civil/environmental engineer to address the issues of providing clean water and/or clean air to people. At Bouverie, I was able to learn about conservation and restoration of resources. I know I will carry all that I learned at Bouverie with me throughout my life and hopefully be able to use that knowledge to make a positive impact with my work."

In December 2009, Audubon Canyon Ranch awarded the first-ever David Bouverie Scholarship to Sonoma resident Gerrit Van Sickle. For more information on the award and its recipient, click here.

The Fund
In June 2009, The David Bouverie Scholarship Fund of Audubon Canyon Ranch was established in memory of Phyllis Ellman, a longtime ACR Board member, supporter, "founding mother" of the Bouverie Preserve Environmental Education Program, Bouverie docent, and a member of the Quercus Quire (the ACR choir), The Fund provides academic scholarships to graduates of the Bouverie Junior Naturalist (Juniper) Program.

Phyllis requested the Fund be named after David Bouverie, who, she remembered, talked about the need to provide financial support to motivate students with a sincere interest in higher education and the natural sciences.

The Dennis and Carol Ann Rockey Fund of the Marin Community Foundation awarded ACR a grant of $25,000 to establish the David Bouverie Scholarship Fund, to which many in the ACR community have also contributed and which ACR hopes to grow.

In June 2010, the Dennis and Carol Ann Rockey Fund renewed their support of the scholarship program, for which ACR is grateful. Audubon Canyon Ranch is honored to remember Phyllis Ellman through the David Bouverie Scholarship Fund.

In the words of Phyllis Ellman
Just before her death, Phyllis was interviewed by Gaye LeBaron and Loretta Zweig, longtime Bouverie Preserve docents and friends of Phyllis. They chatted with Phyllis about her life, and she told stories about growing up in the Midwest, her career in education, meeting her husband George Ellman, their move to California and memories of the Bouverie Preserve from the very beginning to the present.
