Bolinas Lagoon and
the Oil Spill Audubon Canyon Ranch
is concerned about the oil spill on November 7th,
when the Cosco Busan hit the base of the Bay Bridge,
spilling 58,000 gallons of bunker fuel into the San
Francisco Bay. Fortunately, despite news reports
and our worst fears, indications to-date are that very
little oil has reached the Bolinas Lagoon, and the
threat to the Lagoon is abating.
ACR is in regular conversation with the Bolinas
Fire Department, and federal, state and county
agencies that are involved with local clean up
efforts. At the early-December meeting of the
multi-agency Bolinas Lagoon Technical Advisory Committee
(BLTAC), we will discuss the spill's threat,
response, utilization of volunteers and
resources, and lessons learned.
Research conducted by ACR science staff in concert
with other Bay Area scientists will continue,
including shorebird and waterbird studies.
Wednesday, Nov 13th marks the first shorebird
count this winter, where ACR volunteers will count
shorebirds along Tomales Bay. In light of the
recent spill, they will also look for oiled birds and
notify the appropriate agencies for rescue, if
necessary.

Notes:
Did you know?
In autumn, many spider species molt. Often
what you might assume is a dead spider lingering in your
garage or closet is the shed exoskeleton of the spider,
not the spider itself.
Enjoy exploring together! |
