Calling all Heron and Egret enthusiasts...

black-crowned night heron

Join volunteers who rally forth each spring to observe majestic herons and egrets as part of the
Heron and Egret Project , a decades-long effort to monitor these nesting birds in the North Bay.

Choose a nesting site and make five or more visits to the colony during the nesting season (early March to late June) and record information on bird behavior and nesting success.

The ability to identify Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Cattle Egrets, and Black-crowned Night-Herons (like the one pictured here) is required, but beginning birders can be paired with seasoned observers for "in the field" training. Interested? Good, because we need you; please email the Cypress Grove Research Center today!

Family Exploring

Frogs, vultures and wildflowers, oh my!

Here are some fun nature facts to discuss next time you're wandering outdoors with children:

Turkey vultures lower their body temperature at night to conserve energy. In the morning, they spread
their black wings to the sun to warm up again.

Sky Lupine - a striking California native plant - changes color in response to bee pollination:
unpollinated flowers have a white banner while pollinated ones are purple (check out photo above).

Frog tadpoles are vegetarians, while adult frogs are carnivores. During metamorphosis when the digestive system is switching over from veggies to meat, the tadpoles do not eat. How do they survive? They reabsorb their tail!

Fascinating, isn't it?  Learn more at a Bouverie Preserve Guided Nature Walk this spring.
