Andy Goldsworthy Day at Bouverie Preserve
Inspired
by environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy, junior
naturalists, called Junipers, constructed inspired natural
masterpieces last month at the Bouverie Preserve.
Andy Goldsworthy works
with natural materials such as twigs, leaves, flowers, sand, rocks,
clay, snow and ice to create intriguing sculptures and designs
that inevitably erode, collapse, decompose or wash away, always
returning to the earth. His temporary art pieces are documented through
photographic images.
Though Mr. Goldsworthy was
not at Bouverie in person, his work and artistic process are contagious
and inspired the students to create their own impermanent
masterpieces using natural materials on the preserve.

ACR research gains international attention
We are proud to announce
that two scientific articles by ACR staff recently received special
attention in international conservation science journals.
The Society of Wetland
Scientists selected an article on wetland landscape conservation by
John Kelly, Ph.D., (ACR's Director of Conservation Science and
Habitat Protection) and co-authors from ACR and PRBO Conservation
Science. It appeared as the featured article in the June
2008 issue of Wetlands, an international, interdisciplinary
journal concerned with all aspects of wetland science and
conservation. The title of the article is "Landscape
influence on the quality of heron and egret colony sites" (Wetlands
28: 257-275).
In addition, the lead
article in the recent winter issue of Waterbirds - an
international scientific journal dedicated to the conservation of
waterbirds - was written by John Kelly, Ph.D., and co-authors
from ACR and the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory. The paper is
entitled "Status, Trends, and Implications for the Conservation of
Heron and Egret Nesting Colonies in the San Francisco Bay Area"
(Waterbirds 30: 455-478).
