A reporter from West Marin's local radio station joined
volunteer scientists last month as they surveyed foraging egrets
by plane.
Dr. John Kelly, Director of Conservation Science and
Habitat Protection, notes "herons and egrets are excellent
subjects for wetlands research. They help us answer the
questions: How far do they go? What kind of places do they go
to?"

Learn, teach, inspire:
Become a Docent of the Bouverie Preserve!
Join a dedicated and enthusiastic group of seasoned
naturalist teachers called Bouverie Docents. The extensive training
features local conservation science and education experts and includes
instruction on natural history, native cultures, and teaching
techniques.
Upon graduation, volunteer docents have the knowledge and
confidence to lead field trips for schoolchildren and inspire an
appreciation and respect for nature.
Orientations are this month and training begins in August ...

Early Detection and Rapid Response help cope with
biological invasions
This year ACR celebrates California's Invasive Weed
Awareness Week by joining with partners around the Bay Area to launch
the Bay Area Early Detection Network (BAEDN). The BAEDN is an
exciting partnership of citizens, scientists, and land managers that
unites and coordinates invasive plant management across the nine
counties of the Bay Area. This ambitious effort, led by ACR's
Director of Habitat Protection and Restoration Dr. Daniel Gluesenkamp
with support from ACR Partners in Conservation and the Rockey Fund of
the Marin Community Foundation, is the first of its kind and will serve
as a model for similar networks planned throughout California.
Whether we
are protecting humans from swine flu or protecting ecosystems from
sudden oak death, early detection and rapid response (EDRR) is the most
effective and cost-efficient approach for coping with biological
invasions. Audubon Canyon Ranch has made EDRR a core strategy for
management of our sanctuaries. ACR Habitat Protection and
Restoration staff have made a score of critical detections in the last
year, ranging from new pepperweed infestation in Bolinas Lagoon,
to discovery of distaff and purple star thistle in Sonoma
Valley. By discovering these outbreaks early and responding before
they have grown unmanageable, we have saved money and habitat. But
to be truly effective we must partner with neighbors and colleagues and
so we have promoted EDRR strategy regionally, by building the Bay Area
Early Detection Network.
You can
help by volunteering on one of Audubon Canyon Ranch's
sanctuaries. To get involved, visit the ACR website or email acr@egret.org. You
can also report invasive outbreaks directly via the BAEDN website. Your help can
really make a difference.

Peregrine falcons suspected to
be nesting at Bouverie Preserve
For the
second consecutive year, Peregrine Falcons are suspected of
nesting at the Bouverie Preserve. A pair of falcons returned to
a small cave by the side of the waterfall, and there are reports of
nestlings at the mouth of the cave. Through the spring, the adult
birds were observed regularly flying up and down the canyon and
perched in the snags above the waterfall.
