Acorns are a major food for deer, jays and many other animals, and they were extremely important food for Native cultures. (Our guide – Dave Self - likes to eat them too, especially as acorn-bread stuffing in turkey). We’ll seek out various oaks (we have 9 species) to get a look at their acorns, assess their acorn crops, and to observe associated wildlife. You’ll learn about oaks, acorns, wildlife the use acorns, oak ecology and Native Management of oaks and their habitats, including intentional burning under the trees.
