- Zoom Video Conference
Learning from M.F.K. Fisher's Last House: What Fisher's writing and design choices teach us about making our homes a sanctuary for creative work, good food, and creating joy.
Led by author Elizabeth Fishel with guest speaker Kennedy Golden.
About the workshop: During this two-hour online introduction to Fisher's life and legacy, you will be inspired by a virtual tour of the house she designed on the magnificent Bouverie Preserve in Glen Ellen, CA. She lived there for her last 20 years and produced 18 iconic books there. Her younger daughter, Kennedy Golden, will join us to discuss Fisher's beloved nooks and crannies for writing, rest, socializing, and appreciating the Sonoma landscape. We will use short guided exercises, photos, discussion and sharing to reflect on our lives during sheltering-in-place and come away with new ideas for transforming our homes and creative practices.
About the Instructor: Elizabeth Fishel is a widely published journalist and the author of five nonfiction books about womens' lives and family relationships, among them, Sisters, Reunion, and Getting to 30: A Parent's Guide to the 20-Something Years (co-written with Jeffrey Arnett). She leads the Friday Writers' groups in Oakland, CA and has given workshops on creativity at UC Berkeley, the Mesa Refuge, and Ghost Ranch in New Mexico. She has been doing research for a project about creativity in the second half of life and the transformational role of houses in the lives of literary women.
About the Guest Speaker: Kennedy Golden was born in Southern California. She returned to her home state after traveling and living with her mother, M.F.K. Fisher in France and Switzerland, and spending college years in New York, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. After nearly 45 years working at Mills College from which she retired as Associate Dean of Students, she is happily spending retirement creating the home she desires, and experimenting with cooking in ways not possible while working.
