Note the bill on the Ring-necked duck, showing a white ring near the black-tipped end. Here we can barely see a second white ring around the base of the bill on the face. The brownish flanks may indicate a first year male. Most first-year male ducks resemble the plumage of the adult female of the species for at least several months.
